A Star Spangled Day!

War to be followed by dance

Happy Independence Day! Everyone in camp is eagerly awaiting today’s 231st annual Revolutionary War game, and the excitement is mounting on both the American and British sides. Soldiers from each side are confident of victory, sure that divine providence is on their side. When asked for comment, though, Intermediate Benny Arnold had only to offer that “I’m not sure which way this one will turn out.” Regardless of the outcome, and of the fate of colonies, both winners and losers will be able to revel in camp’s first dance of the summer this evening.

Fireboys in Action: the Pioneers learn about life at the fire station

The best part, according to Chad Canning, was getting to sit in the ambulance. For Jared Brown, it was that “we got to try on the firefighters’ clothing...and it was really heavy!”

The Pioneers had a fun and educational trip to the Willsboro fire station yesterday evening, courtesy of Waterfront Director Shai Walker and Assistant Headmaster Dave Durant, both local firefighters and E.M.T.’s. The boys were able to sit in a fire truck and ambulance and learn about the different uses of various firefighting vehicles. They had their blood pressure and pulse checked and were able to try out clothing and equipment as well. Shai Walker was thrilled to be able to provide this opportunity, noting that “it’s great for kids to get a behind-the-scenes look at everything that happens just beyond the lights and alarms.”

Sports Results: Pok-O loses three to Lincoln

Yesterday was filled with sports action at camp, and though the Pok-O-MacCready squads lost their three games with Camp Lincoln, the matches were filled with fine play and sportsmanship. The mattpopupIntermediate baseball team fell behind early by a score of 13-0, but then rallied over the last few innings to bring the final tally to a score of 16-4. Coach Will Pope was pleased with how his team continued to play hard and noted the fine fielding plays of Matt Shayne (at left), Erik Matson, and Eric GreenwaldTyler Trubish also contributed a key bases-clearing triple. The Senior baseball team was outmatched against a stellar Lincoln and lost by a large margin. Ted Gertner and Corey Mossberg had Pok-O’s only hits, but good efforts were contributed by all. In Ultimate Frisbee action the Pok-O team quickly fell behind by a score of 6-0; as ADV member Jacob Gittler pointed out, “We had trouble getting used to their zone defense, but then we started to adjust.” Pok-O came roaring back after half-time to make it a thrilling content but lost by a final margin of 11-7. Geoffrey Livsey was a key contributor as the team’s handler, while many players made clutch catches. There will be more sports action later in the week, and team rosters and pictures can be found by clicking here.
