COMEDY, DRAMA & ART

It’s not all about swimming, fishing and hiking

KatieGig   The term “Cool Work” has a double meaning when applied to camp’s pottery program. Not only do the finished pieces display talent and creativity, but the pottery room, located in the basement of the MacCready farm house, is traditionally 10-15 degrees cooler than the outside air.

Once considered the domain of just young girls, pottery has never been more popular than it is now. Boys and girls of all ages take the course, including many of the 15 and 16-year olds. Katie “started out last year and I really enjoy pottery because it’s both fun and relaxing.” Program instructor Kelly Schiulaz remarks that Katie is “really eager to learn and she picked it right up. It’s like she didn’t have the winter off; she just came back this summer and went right back at it.”

When the summer concludes, Katie plans to “keep some of the stuff and give others away,” yet her plans may go even further into the future. “I think this is something I’d like to pursue.”

ALPINE HIGH

“Trip Week” began Friday, with over a dozen hikes, boating trips and scenic excursions scheduled. (See List).

Arriving late to camp- just in time for trip week- is long-time camper Mackenzie “Macky” Young. She had good reason for the late showing: Young, 15, came straight to camp from France where, earlier this week, she reached the top of 16,000 foot Mount Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps.

Climbing with her father, former camper and counselor Wally, the group reached the top in three days. “It was cold, but it was a lot of fun!”

TOMORROW: New horses ride into camp!
