A Fond Farewell

 4-Weekers Leave Amidst Great Fanfare

armwrite “It went by way too fast,” exclaimed Joshua Moody, “and next year I’m going to be a 7-weeker no matter what my mom says!” Four weeks have flown by, and this morning the 4-weekers from MacCready and Pok-O departed, with many fond memories as well as dreams of the summers to come. The farewell started yesterday evening with the annual awards ceremony, in which each camper was recognized by his or her counselor and given a folder with photos, letters, and certificates from the summer. Each camp then met separately to hand out its larger awards, with particular attention given to each camper’s years of awardstableservice at camp; recognized for eight years at camp were Lindsay Kantor, Collin McCullough, and Jackson Connors-Kellgren, and for an amazing ten years at camp was Geoffrey Livsey. Next was the awarding of the MacCready M’s and Pok-O P’s; these are chosen by the counselors and bestowed upon outstanding campers in each section. The 4-weekers honored in the girls camp were Daniela Orozco, Emma Dietz, Madeline Murphy, Katelyn Swensen, Heidi Taggart, Lily Turovsky, Emma Malpeso, Emilia Malpeso, Caroline Wood, Andee Bucciarelli, Rose Milando, Marisa Malloy; recognized in the boys camp were Chad Canning, Ian Arthur, Cal Fullerton, Ian Marshall, Lucas Schaffer, Jason Veitch, Mark Stagno, and Collin McCullough.

After a brief interlude, all the boys and girls gathered in the dining hall for an amazing slide show presentation, filled with pictures of campers and scenery from the past four weeks. And then, the highlight of the evening: the announcing of the Honor Camper awards. This award is camp’s highest tribute, for it is voted upon by the campers as they recognize their peer who best served the camp, the section, and his/her fellow campers. The lights dimmed, past Honor Campers came forward, and the following names were announced: Zach Gallin, Kevin O’Leary, Mark Stagno, Jackson Connors-Kellgren, Sarah Radisch, Hannah Sargent, Heidi Taggart, Emma Malpeso; additionally, Meghan Rossini was honored by her peers with The C.I.T. Sheet award. The singing of the camp song rounded off a magnificent evening...and with three full weeks still to come!

A Beautiful Day at the MacCready Horse Show

The day dawned with clear, blue skies, and no one was happier than camp’s 45 competitive riders, eager for their first home horse show of the summer. “It was a great day for riding,” exclaimed Riding Director Cat Harrison, “for we had beautiful weather, a brand new set of jumps, and many, many riders who went ‘up a class’ from the last show. For example, Christian Artuso went from Walk Trot last week to Walk Trot Canter this week.” Other highlights included Katie Gigantiello earning 1st and 2nd place ribbons in her second attempt at a Low Hunter class and Caitlin Barwise turning heads in the Hunter ring with her fine, confident riding of Mikey. Additionally, Dana Samson rode Holley in the horse’s first ever show and garnered a 3rd and two 2nds. To see the full results from the MacCready Horse Show, click here.

sailcompetitors  The Long Pond Regatta was held yesterday under blue skies and with steady winds, and Sailing Director Eric Bauer was very pleased with the fine competition throughout several heats of races. He remarked that the final race was one of the closest he has seen at camp, with the final margin between the four boats being just a matter of seconds. The four finalists are shown below in the order of their finish, from left to right, with the top spot claimed by the underdogs in the race, Max Greenwald and Jake Bell, in a stellar performance as they just edged out Rudy Peugeot and Amir Hay.

In Pok-O-MacCready’s own intra-camp tennis tournament, the Pok-O Open, it was a sister and brother combo making it into each final. On the women’s side of the tourney, it was Lindsay Kantor, longtime camp champ, competing against Rachel Bergman. Though Kantor won by an 8-1 score, tennis director Cecilia Disney said that the match featured “many close and amazing points---the best I’ve ever seen at camp---complete with charges to the nets, drives from the baseline, and even spin shots!” Lindsay’s brother Matt made his first finals at Pok-O on the men’s side, but he was bested by the steady, consistent play of Dave Horwich in an 8-4 match. Stay tuned for the upcoming showdown between the two champions!
