On the Eve of the Deathly Hallows

Counting down until the midnight release of the new Harry Potter book

harryhagrid Many campers and counselors are abuzz over tonight’s release of the seventh and final Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. As per tradition, boys Headmaster and noted Potterologist Erik Zimmerman will make the midnight journey to the Plattsburgh bookstore to pick up the 25 or so copies of the book that have been ordered by campers and staff. Zim has also addressed the two camps as to the importance of not revealing plot details to others; as he pointed out, “not just with Harry but with real life, don’t spoil things for others---let them experience life for themselves.” Dedicated readers will be able to take full advantage of one of tomorrow morning’s clubs: the Harry Potter Reading Hour. And as to the question of who will live and who will die? Well, you’ll have to read it for yourself.

snapeimageThe Question of the Day: Is Professor Snape good or evil?

Rachel: Snape is good, because Dumbledore is so logical that he just wouldn’t have trusted Snape otherwise.

Geoffrey: Snape is evil, and there’s no doubt about it...and Sirius Black is going to come back and kill him.

Grace: Snape is evil, because of what he did to Dumbledore at the end of the 6th book.

Zach: Snape is good, because Dumbledore would never misplace his trust in someone.

Dan: Snape is both; he is staying with whoever has the power at the moment...and based on that, he’ll finally go to the dark side.

Diana and Devon: Snape is good, for it has all been a big elaborate plan by Dumbledore to eliminate Voldemort.

Dorothy: Snape is good, for by doing what he did he allowed Harry to be more heroic by killing Voldemort without Dumbledore’s help.

Jacob: Snape is evil, because of what he did to Dumbledore and he made an unbreakable promise to Voldemort’s followers.

Josh: Snape is good, for he could have killed Harry a long time ago if he had wanted to.

Zim: While Snape may never be loved, he will be proven to be loyal. He was forced to do what he did to Dumbledore because of the Unbreakable Vow and in order to keep his cover. Dumbledore trusted him completely, and I expect we will soon know why. Perhaps it has something to do with his relationship with Harry’s mom. In the end, Snape will sacrifice himself in order to save Harry and bring down Lord Voldemort.

How far can a frisbee travel? Would you believe 2,000 miles?!

Oliver Moody really got into frisbee last summer at camp, so much so that when his omoodyfrisbeefamily went on vacation to Wisconsin after camp he brought his beloved Pok-O frisbee with him. Unfortunately, though, Oliver lost the frisbee on an errant throw into Lake Michigan, and that was the end of that frisbee. Until three months later, when Don McMullen, a friend of Pok-O director Sharp Swan, was walking along the Chicago shoreline and spotted a frisbee floating in the water. Picking it up he recognized the camp insignia and sent it in the mail to Sharp, who, seeing Oliver’s name on the disc, mailed it along to Oliver with a note explaining its amazing journey and discovery. Oliver says, “I was really surprised that it came back to me, and very happy.” Oliver has graciously donated the frisbee and its story to the camp archives, where it will become a part of camp tradition and lore.

Coming Up Today and Tomorrow: MacCready soccer game; The Camp Musical; three 46-R finishes; the MacCready Horse Show; 4-Week Award Ceremony; and the Camp Slide Show.
