“What a great weekend!” exclaimed Wilderness Director Kenny Ryba, as trip after trip returned to camp with stories of fantastic views, vigorous climbs, and much camaraderie. “I have been particularly impressed with the new campers and their wonderful enthusiasm for hiking,” added Ryba. In total 16 hiking and boating trips were out of camp this weekend, including ten overnight excursions. Every MacCready camper, with the exception of those attending the Lake Placid Horse Show (see story below), went on a day hike on Sunday, ranging from the local peaks all the way to the heights of Whiteface Mountain. Already this summer, camp’s hikers have reached the summits of 28 of the 46 high peaks, and many campers have made their first-ever ascent of a mountain. So far more than half of the campers have already slept out overnight; Oliver Moody, for one, was thrilled to be on an overnight: “ I love camping out, because you’re not as rushed and you have more time to enjoy the view. Plus there’s Spam.” Click here to see a full list of camp trips and mountains climbed.
Tomorrow’s edition of The Pok-O-Mac Times will feature a gallery of hiking photos as well as trip reports from the campers. To have a brief experience of what it is like to be on an Adirondack summit, click here to see a panoramic video with commentary taken from the top of Phelps Mountain.
