4 Events, 4 Different Winners!

Indian Days Off to Thrilling and Competitive Start

For many campers and counselors, it’s the best day of the summer: The World’s Most Complicated Game in the morning, The Great Journey or Rolas in the afternoon, and Tug of War in the evening. And rsdeermeatyesterday’s start to two days of Indian competitions certainly lived up to expectations, with outstanding individual and team performances throughout the day. The Tuscarora, who finished last in every previous event, shocked their fellow tribes by narrowly edging the Mohawk to capture The World’s Most Complicated Game. The Tuscarora ran hard to win the pathfinding portion of the game; Rachael Schott of the Seneca was the first to find one of the elusive foraging items (at left), but it was the Mohawk who found the most items. Everyone had his or her own contributions; for Pioneer Zach Gallin, his highlight was “finding a dock spider all by myself!”

In the afternoon, the girls participated in the newly expanded Great Journey, with the racing legs nowpassingwaterbatonv being followed by a tribal task and puzzle. The Journey was a great success, noted White Woman Dana Beck, and she pointed out the fine efforts of Caroline Wood as an runner and of Lexi Coleman as a master puzzle solver. The Mohawk were the overall victors in this event, with the Onondaga finishing a close second. For the boys, the Rolas competition was amazingly close, with three different tribes finishing with three victories. The tie breaker was goals scored, and the Cayuga, buoyed by their younger team, claimed first place with 19 goals, closely followed by the Seneca and Onondaga.

The evening brought many thrilling tug-of-war matches, with several lasting almost two minutes in duration. By the end there were two undefeated teams: the Cayuga girls and Onondaga boys. Claiming the most points overall, though, were the Seneca, who finished second in the boys and girls categories. With four different point winners over the course of the day, this promises to be a very competitive competion, one that will probably be determined in today’s final event: Capture the Chief’s Bonnet. To see the full standings as well as the tribal photos, click here.

Just two days until Opening Night!

The camper play opens for its annual one-night show this Friday, and everyone is eagerly awaiting this big event. Director Kelly Zimmerman provided the following description of the play and cast:

“The Camp Musical” starring Grace London, Will Shannon, Adina Shapiro, Nathan Swan, Maggie Belshe, and Alex Sieger is an amusing and campy adaptation of High stagepreview1vertSchool Musical. Set at Pok-O-MacCready High, home of the Blueboars, it’s a story about acceptance and support. It’s about overcoming stereotypes that others have of us, and about overcoming our own fears to learn that, yes, dreams do come true if you are willing to take the risk. The Camp Musical reiterates a 103-year-old held value of Pok-O-MacCready Camps: that you can be anyone you want to be and you can do anything you set your mind to.

All of the actors and actresses have been very dedicated, focused, andstagepreview3 energetic in getting ready for the performance. Grace London notes that “everyone is working very hard and it’s going well, and Dana Samson says that “everyone is having a lot of fun rehearsing the songs.” In addition to the above-mentioned actors, other members of the drama class and cast include Dalya Harrat, Lilah Burke, Lexie Coleman, Natalie Carroll, Anna Greenwood, Katherine Zimmerman, Jenna Zimmerman, Hannah Bielenson, Alex Gigantiello, Paige Gigantiello, Elizabeth Swan, Hannah Karp, Teonna O’Leary, Moustafa Ahmed, and Sean Holmes. This play is also fortunate to have many cameo appearances by campers and counselors. Go Blueboar!

Following is the third of three selections from Sunday’s Vespers on “The Spirit and Magic of Camp”; this piece was written by Sarah Beilenson:

To me, camp is like a bag of jellybeans. Sometimes you get a lime, and you’re disappointed because your favorites are the blue raspberry. There are always going to be parts of camp you enjoy more than others, whether or not you loathe or love them. Sometimes you get to chill out and play some guitar, talk to your friends and sleep a little (red cinnamon), and sometimes you’re put on a really tough hike (buttered popcorn). But what camp has taught me is that as much as you may want to plug your nose and swallow, you shouldn’t! Because if you don’t taste the buttered popcorn, how will you enjoy the watermelon? Sometimes you have to just close your eyes and reach into the bag, because life isn’t always going to hand you toasted marshmallow.

Today’s action: girls Tribal Tasks, boys Great Race, Capture the Chief’s Bonnet, and the final Council Fire and declaration of the tribal champion!
