In an impressive display of talent and teamwork, the Cayuga cruised to victory in yesterday’s 103rd annual boys Indian Boat Carnival. This event was postponed from last Sunday, and yesterday’s evening setting featured clear skies, moderate temperatures, and great boating action. The Cayuga got off to a strong start with a kayaking victory from Emmanuel Peugeot, who also later won the surfboard paddle event by narrowly edging out his brother Rudy. The Cayuga also received winning efforts from their Pioneer rowboat tandem of Alec Gonzalez and John Lynch, as well as from chief Lucas Schaffer in the kayak tipping event and from their “Sink the Bismark” squad (pictured at right). Other stellar performances came from Mohawk Oliver Moody in the canoe bobbing event and from the Seneca duo of Jason Veitch and Abrahim Mahallati in the big canoe race. That latter event helped propel the Seneca into a second place finish, with the Mohawk finishing third, the Onondaga fourth, and the Tuscarora fifth; full Indian standings can be found here. Cayuga chief Schaffer is confident about his team’s ability to continue its successful run, noting that “everone is very enthusiastic and is working really well together.” The other tribes will soon get their shot to knock off the Cayuga, for the Indian Days events kick off in full swing with Monday evening’s council fire. |
