Volleyball a Big Hit

Pineapples of Paradise Prevail in Annual Tournament

It is one of camp’s most popular classes, and now the annual intra-camp volleyball tournament (aka the Pok-vballset1O Closed) is fast becoming one of Pok-O-MacCready’s favorite sporting events. Yesterday’s tourneyvballspike2 featured six coed teams , all composed of campers from volleyball classes, in a friendly yet competitive round-robin tournament. Volleyball guru Josh Bornt spoke highly of the overall quality of play, saying that “everyone competed very well and had a lot of fun.” One of the stars of the day for her all-round excellence was Alicia Maravall, while Sophia Oliva was also singled out by Bornt as a “natural-born volleyball player.” The two teams that made it into the finals were the heavily favored Pineapples of Paradise, who had a decided advantage in age and height, and the underdog Foreign Legion team. In a hotly contested final match the Pineapples of Paradise won by a narrow margin of 25-21, wrapping up a fun afternoon for all.

What’s the latest craze at camp? How about milk crate climbing? This popular activity has now been a feature of rock climbing class as well as Saturday morning clubs, and climbing instructor John Schaffer says that it is a great test of an individual’s balance. The task: while harnessed and belayed, climb up milk crates one at a time, placing the next crate each time you ascend a crate. For a while Liana Mistriel held the record with 15 crates, but recently she was surpassed as Rose Milando and Gabe Orozco each topped off at an amazing 16 milk crates. 17, anyone?
