GREEK GAMES BEGIN

Festival Commences with Opening Ceremony and Trojan War

Check out full RESULTS and a PHOTO GALLERY from Sunday’s Big MacCready Horse Show

GreekFestivalAncient Greece, 441 BC-- The Gods descended from Mt. Olympus and proclaimed the “2007 Greek FestivalGreek04 is open.” So began Pok-O-MacCready’s session #2 big camp-wide competition..

The Festival began with the traditional opening ceremony as Zeus introduced the other Gods, described their roles, and informed the campers of Sparta, Athens, Troy and Argos what was expected of them

The first event, held Monday evening, was the “Trojan War”, a derivative of camp’s “Black Line” game which is in itself a derivative of dodgeball. “We had a good strategy,” boasted Athenian James Boucher. “We flooded to the line and kept opponents pinned down.” It was evidently a strategy that worked, as Athens took the competition, followed by Troy, Argos in third, and 2006 Champion Sparta fourth. “There were so many times we were so close to getting the horse,” lamented Sarah MacKay of 2nd place Troy.

Other event highlights included Argosian Tim Caradonna battling “like one against 15 or something” and surviving to spark a mini comeback for his team..... The God Achilles actually got hit in the heel by a ball!..... “We didn’t like the spears,” agreed Maggie, Jennifer and Alex (below, left), “but we were good at hiding behind the barriers.”.... Jess Sieger summed it up best: “I had a lot of fun pretending I knew what I was doing!”

The Festival concludes today with The Odyssey, the Peloponnesian War, and the Greek Feast.

THE SUMMER CAMP EXPERIENCE

These are excerpts from short essays written by senior section campers Brian Getz and Max Eichberg, and read by the authors at Sunday evening’s final vespers service.

For the past two years, Brian and I have felt that camp has changed us into the people we are today. Camp teaches young men and women the skills and traits that are needed in life. Through maturity, discipline, leadership and respect, camp is truly one of those places for life lessons.

I have experienced events in my life that, before camp, were hidden but, because of camp, have opened up in my head. Although my time at camp has been short, and although I may not come back because we are moving, I feel that camp has been a stepping stone in my life. Though the stone may sink, you always find something to get back up on.

At camp you learn to just be yourself and have fun because these memories will last a lifetime.

Thanks Pok-O for the memorable two years of my life.

To me, camp has been a place to learn and grow and it has taught me so much. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned at camp is to take a chance and leave my “comfort zone”. This is not an easy thing to do because we all know where we are comfortable and it’s very easy to sit back and stay there.

We are all sitting here at the final vespers service of such an amazing summer, and we have all found the experiences that Pok-O-MacCready has to offer. We have all, at one point, come to a new place, made new friends, and shared in an experience that we may never had at home. Just by coming to camp and leaving home, we have gained this lesson in leaving our comfort zone.

So that’s just a little something to keep in the back of you head if you’d like, but it should stick with you because the lessons you learn at camp should last a lifetime.

TOOTING THEIR HORNS

Camp Pok-O-Moonshine would like to officially salute buglers Andrew and Maxx for their hard work, not to mention superb playing, during the course of the summer.

The duo shared duties of playing wake-up reveille, first and second calls for meals, and evening taps.

Late arriving C.I.T. Georgia Ladd performed the same function at Camp MacCready.
