ONONDAGA MIGHTY POWER

Tribe in Black Captures Opening Indian Event

Capturing three of the first four events while never finishing lower than third all afternoon, the Onondaga tribe won the opening event of the 2006 Indian Games Schedule: The Great Indian Track Meet. The meet featured all of the traditional favorites including the Keeseville Fire Brigade, the Dragon Race and the Leap Frog. An always crowd-pleasing event is the “Cracker, Whistle and Pie Slam” and this year didn’t disappoint. The Tuscarora was led by the duo of Mark Balderston (“You take the pie and I’ll take the ground”) and Geoff Livsey. They finished first for the event, but the Onondaga took the day. “It was a lot of fun because the games were exciting,” said first year tribal member Max Schoen. “My favorite event was the shoe tangle. I didn’t think we had won the track meet, so I was surprised and happy when they announced us.” (FULL RESULTS HERE)

ANOTHER OPENING, ANOTHER SHOW

The season’s first “Moonshiner” was staged Thursday evening to a packed house at the Col. H.T. Swan Barn board Theatre. A Moonshiner is the camp term for skit night. Virtually every section at camp put on at least one skit. Some of the memorable performaces: The C.I.T.’s bachelorette auction; The Advanced Section’s Gospel service and dance rave; The Lodge section used an animal analogy in their skit about “being nice to new campers”; The entire Pioneer section put on a “fireworks show.” But the hit of the night was the Baldy Brothers (upper left) singing their rendition of “Snap, Crackle, Pop” “Best skit I’ve seen in three years,” said Pok-O Headmaster Erik Zimmerman.

MacCready camper Teonna O’Leary showed some theatrical courage by staging a dance act. “I was a bit nervous at first and thought about backing out. But I did it and ended up getting two ovations. Plus, a boy came up to me afterword and said he thought my dance was ‘really good!’”
