In keeping with the oldest and one of the most popular camp traditions, the first week of camp has seen 26 wilderness trips leave camp. They’ve been staged in the form of hikes, kayak trips, fishing excursions and climbs up mountains.
Lots of climbs up mountains. 20 of the Adirondack 46 high peaks have already been scaled. Nearly a dozen other peaks have been climbed, including the “Pok-O Patch” mountains surrounding camp and Long Pond. On Tuesday, every boy camper ventured out into the wild, while Sunday saw over one hundred girls campers complete a hike.
“I’ve never seen so much nature,” raved Viktor von Selchow, who has come to camp from Germany. “I saw a fire salamander, the woods were beautiful and so were the views!” Carly Amurao, who yesterday climbed her first 46er, Sawteeth, said it “was hard work, but well worth it for my first mountain.” Brad Paulette has embraced the social benefits: “You get to know other people on hikes; It’s sort of like just hanging out.”
Wilderness Director Ken Ryba boasts that “Things have gone swimmingly well. By ‘swimmingly’ and ‘well’ I mean that there’s been a lot of rain. Seriously, the kids have been great and we have a lot of great trips planned for this week and the weeks ahead.”
