Less than 24 hours after arriving at camp, the campers at Pok-O-Moonshine were gone again. But not too far, and not for too long.
Following the first day of morning classes, an afternoon and evening of wilderness trips were scheduled. “We really want to get everyone into the woods right away,” said programming Director Tim Singer. “That way, we can introduce new campers to this portion of the program we love so much here at camp.”
Based on reviews, the new campers did indeed enjoy the experience. “It was pretty good,” reviewed senior Abraham Mahallati, who climbed Hurricane Mt. “I hadn’t hiked in New York before. Nice views; not too tough.” Intermediate Peter Resnick, who climbed Rattlesnake, concurred. “It was pretty easy going, with some nice views.”
By staying out until mid-evening, the campers got to experience the joys of cooking dinner in the wild. “We had SPAM and Ramen and made grilled cheese sandwiches with bagels. It was awesome!”, said Resnick.
With the full camp trips out of the way, a series of optional day and overnight hikes, water trips and scenic excursions commence later this week for both boys and girls. Trips will last until the final week of camp, with some campers expected to finish their Adirondack Forty-Sixers: The 46 high peaks (over 4000 feet) in New York State.
