FAREWELL FOUR-WEEKERS

Session #1 Draws to Close

Farewell7 Four weeks of fun. Four weeks of learning, laughing, swimming, fishing, hiking and riding. Four weeks of living life the “way it ought to be!”

The first session of the 2006 camp season came to a close Monday morning with a mix of handshakes, hugs and tears. The departing campers loaded the cars and bus; with them, they take awards, finished projects and, mostly, memories to last forever. One camper who boarded the bus was C.I.T. Julia Schweitzer, but she will be riding the bus back to camp tomorrow! “I made a deal with my parents. They let me stay for seven weeks, but only if I came home and had dinner with them.”

Campers remaining for the entire summer are spending Monday at the beach and the movies. Session two campers all arrive Tuesday morning. (See a gallery of the emotional farewell here.)

Senior camper Devin Hall became Pok-O-MacCready’s first camper of the 2006 season to finish his Adirondack FortyDevinDew-Sixers. Hall completed the three year mission Sunday at 1:11 pm on the summit of Whiteface Mountain. “It’s just exciting to finish,” said the 13-year old Texas native. “I’ve been thinking about it ever since I first came to camp”

For the climb, Hall was joined by eight other campers and two counselors. “It was cloudy most of the morning, but right before we reached the top, it cleared and we had a great view,” said staffer Andy Reithal. The summit celebration included cookies, candy, soda and, of course, baby food.

Hall becomes the 278th member of the Pok-O branch of the 46ers. In a related story, 65 camp trips went out during the four week session. In addition to the sailing, canoeing, kayak and waterfall excursions, the mountain climbing trips climbed 45 of the 46 high peaks. The elusive peak, Panther, is scheduled to be ascended during session #2.

MacShow13THE MacCREADY HORSE SHOW - PART ONE

28 Pok-O-MacCready campers were joined by six visiting riders to comprise the field for the 40th annual MacCready Horse Show #1, staged Sunday morning. Camp riders, competing in a variety of schooling and jumping competitions, garnered over 30 placing ribbons, six champion ribbons and seven reserve ribbons.

The competition was evaluated by a pair of experienced northern New York equestrian judges. In the afternoon’s final class- Cross Rails- Eliza Blum won all three divisions. “I’ve gotten really better over the year and it was just fun to be able to go out their and prove it in a show.”

Blum will remain at camp for the second session and she, along with the other remaining and newly arriving riders, will take part in next weekend’s Ausable Valley event, as well as the Big MacCready, slated for August 6. (SEE FULL RESULTS HERE)
