CAMP ENTERTAINED BY GUYS and DOLLS

Full House Watches Popular Musical

CastShot  “They worked hard, but it paid off. They got to show camp what they’ve been working for these past weeks!”

That was the analysis of a proud director, Bessie Edwards, who managed a cast and crew of some 30 campers to a successful one night performance of Guys and Dolls, staged last night at the Camp MacCready theatre barn.

The musical centers around a pair of marriage-avoiding gamblers and theNathanAdelaide two ladies in their lives-- one a missionary and the other, a dancer. While the four leads- Diana Timko, Sarah Bielenson, Alex Sieger and Harry Yerkes- shared most of the spotlight, this was truly a full ensemble. “It was a little scary singing solo,” said Hannah Bielenson who did a rendition of “Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat”. “But after I got a bit comfortable, it was just like singing at home.” Added supporting player Carder Welles, “It was very cool. At times, we had to ad lib up there. I’m definitely going to do more shows.”

SkyCartwright  With so many different camp activities fighting for the attention of the actors, it was a huge challenge bringing the show together in just a few weeks. “What impressed me the most,” said Edwards, “was seeing that the campers who acting came more easily to, were willing to help out the others.” Additionally, both the director and cast members were quick to cite the other counselors and campers who comprised the crew of vocal instructors and set builders.

As is the case with any stage performance, the satisfaction comes with the response. Hannah Bielenson sums up that “the best part of the experience comes at the end, when everyone claps. It really makes you feel like you accomplished something.”

Regulation and Overtime Not Enough

BrandonOnShoulders   Brandon Siegenfeld’s goal in the sixth round of shootouts proved decisive, giving the Bornt Team the win, and the 2006 championship of the Senior Hockey League. The tally ended a tense cliffhanger that featured back and forth action. During regulation play, the game was tied at one apiece, and then 2-2, to force sudden death overtime. In the end, Bornt captured the title over Team Harrison, 3-2. (*note, teams are named after their counselor/coach/goalie since chosen nicknames were not deemed “appropriate” by the camp Headmaster.)

With no scoring during the extra period, the contest needed to be decided with a shootout. Brad Paulette opened the shootout with a tally for Team Harrison, the third goal of the day forFistPumpGoal the defenseman who led the league in scoring. “It was a close tiring day,” voiced Paulette. “Everyone worked their butts off, the goalies both played well and we all wanted it.” Following a series of fine saves, the shootout boiled down to an attempt by Team Bornt’s Doug Cavers. Under great pressure, he scored (right), to force a sChampionPosingecond round of shootouts.

Once again, the shooters were continually rejected until Siegenfeld’s shot found the mark. “A lot of it was luck, said the game’s hero. “I’m not eactly the best player on our team. The goalie just missed it. I was shocked!”. Following the celebration, Team Bornt head coach Josh Bornt reflected on his record-extending fifth S.H.L. title. “I don’t always have the best team and I’m definitely not the best goalie, but we always seem to come together!” Along with Alex Schade, who scored two goals, James Schott becomes a back-to-back winner of the Coupe Colonel Cup.

MacSoccerShotMacCready Eleven Drops Soccer Match

The four-week session inter-camp sports schedule concluded Friday afternoon with a girls soccer contest on the road at Camp Whipporwill, with an 8-3 defeat. Camp MacCready was without top star Mackey Young, who’s out for the season with a shoulder injury. “We only had eleven players and it was ridiculously hot,” saidLizMichelle coach Elizabeth Disney (looking on, right, with coach Michelle Goldman).

Marian Galan, Brooke Thayer and Meghan Rossini scored for MacCready. Having a busy day in goal was Rose Millando. “There team was very good, they had good maneuvers.” In trying to put some perspective into the one-sided game, the goalkeeper said, “For us not having been together, we were pretty good.” Coach Disney seconded: We played really tough, even though some of them had never played soccer.”
