They are in the midst of the longest current drought at camp. It’s been seven years since the Onondaga last captured the overall Great Indian Games title. But the way they’re going in 2006, the streak may end this summer. With a victory in Saturday’s Great Indian Swim and Boat Carnival, the tribe in black have made it two-for-two in ‘06. Add to that a second place finish in last summer’s three-week competition, and the “‘Dagas” are staked to a commanding early lead. (FULL RESULTS HERE)
In an action packed waterfront extravaganza, the 40th annual Camp MacCready event featured a variety of activities including: “Swamp the Canoe”, “Canoe Bob”, “Windsurf Relay”, “Doggie Paddle Relay” and the Individual Medley. “It was hard, the waves were high,” said Leah Bernstein, who swam freestyle for the Mohawk. Speaking for the victorious Onandaga, Emily Poirier noted that the event was “a mix of fun and work.”
The White Woman- the commissioner of all Indian events- was pleased with “the sportsmanship, especially from the younger girls. The cheers were among the best I’ve heard in years. My favorite moment was when Dorothy Farrell (Onondaga) did her flip in the diving contest (see Photo of the Day).
Indian Events continue this coming week with tribal elections and initiations, as well as the boys Boat Carnival.
