PEDALING THE HILLS

Mountain Bike Race Series Continues

The Adirondack Mountain range offers more than just challenges for the hiker, canoeist or rock climber. The hills, trails and back roads are also perfect for mountain biking. Each week, a band of eager Pok-O-MacCready cyclists travel to the Cadyville, NY races, where they experience a bit of nature and a bit of competition. What’s more: They get to close out the day with dinner at McDonalds!

The Cadyville Bike Races - by, Maxx Eichberg

GabeO  Cadyville is a small rural town not much bigger than Cooperstown (for people who have been there)! As we packed the rusty, blue trailer with the bikes, we were all nervous. Especially the people who had never been there.

As we arrive to a local town park after a 45-minute car ride, our stomachs really started to turn. We lined up at the starting line, took a group photo, and were off.

The races start off with a 100-yard dash. After that, it is a smooth and curvy road that lasts for about one and one-half miles. Then, a fork in the road. If you go straight, there is a 70-degree drop (expert course); left and right really are the same, but the race continues on the left. This is the whole race for the next three miles.

Overall, this was a very fun-filled event. We all had a good time.

(For the second consecutive time, Senior camper Gabe Orozco won the race. Nine Pok-O-MacCready campers joined area racers in the competition, with seven completing the course. (See results here). The next scheduled event is the prestigious Tour de Poko, set for late next week.)

MacCready Drops Softball Opener

BabeRuthPose   Just minutes prior to the opening pitch of Wednesday’s Camp MacCready-Whipporwill softball game, the sky opened up and a steady rain began to fall. Cynics might say that the contest should have been called. But cynics aren’t aware that at Pok-O-MacCready, games are played and fun is had- rain or shine.

It was a slippery, wet afternoon on the diamond, as Camp MacCready let in five runs in the top of the first and could neveMacWhippr catch up. MacCready did plate a few runs, with young Kay Murphy reaching base and veteran Julia Schweitzer coming through with a double.

The biggest stories of the day were participation and interaction. MacCready- with just one team this year- ranged in age from eight to 16, and everyone had a chance to play. And, due to the weather, both teams shared the lone dugout (right), allowing good sportsmanship and a social, as well as a competitive experience.

Inter-camp action for the girls continues next week with both younger and older teams competing in soccer. (Click here to see team photo and full roster)

Pok-O-MacCready’s second dance of the year took place last night in Robinson Hall. Although there was no theme, the Pok-O ADV staff (below) took it upon themselves to come up with some sort of costume scheme.

As for the kids, they danced, socialized or took part in alternate activities.
