It’s billed as “the oldest game known to man” but it can’t be called “the oldest game in the world” because historians are unaware as to what games were played prior to man.
None the less, it’s called Iroquois Nations Rolas, and the game is so ancient, it dates back to its creation at Pok-O-MacCready, way back in 1979. There’s no doubt about the fact that Rolas is one of camp’s most popular and unique competitions. Tribes must get three “rolas” into a “base” to score a point. There are plenty of added intricacies, but that’s all the average spectator needs to know.
On Monday afternoon, the princesses of the five tribes squared off on the Rolas pitch. When the dust settled- and there was plenty of dust- The Seneca and Mohawk tied for first place. Both tribes were unbeaten, with a draw being the result of their head-to-head contest. “It was superawesometabulous!” raved Seneca Sachem Eleanor Roberts, while her counterpart for the Mohawk, Macky Young, added “the games were great. Since I couldn’t play (due to an injury) I was able to coach my tribe better.” Finishing in third place was the Onandaga, while the Cayuga and Tuscarora tied for fourth.

While the girls were tearing up the Rolas pitch, the braves of Pok-O faced off in the 102nd annual Great Iroquois Boat Carnival. Although the carnival lacked funnel cakes, cotton candy, and stuffed animal prizes, it did not lack in excitement and high adventure. “It was a perfect day to be on the water,” stated David Durant, special assistant to the White Woman. The tribes competed in a host of aqua challenges such as: “Sink the Bismark”, “Paddle without Oars” and the “Canoe Bob”.
In keeping with their dominance during the 2006 season, the Onondaga claimed first place. Said tribal Chief Alex Schade, “We won because, compared to the other tribes, we worked superior as a team.” Schade said that one of the keys to victory was “when Brandon (Siegenfeld) won the ‘Playak Chicken Fights.’” Siegenfeld commented on his performance: “I let everyone attack each other and then came up from behind late.”
Second place went to the surging Mohawk, while the Seneca, Cayuga and Tuscarora rounded out the standings. Out of five events staged so far, the Onondaga has taken three 1sts, one 2nd and a 3rd. Action will continue next week with seven events, and two additional contests sandwiched between a pair of council fires.
