ESCAPE FROM CAMP

And It Was “Great”

greatescape

On Monday, campers and staff made their annual trip to the Great Escape, Six Flags amusement park, in Lake George. The best part of the day: “The rides, especially the Comet.” -Christina Fink..... “The food. All of it!” -Montana Machson.... “Hanging out with my friends.” -Eleanor Roberts. Everyone returned to camp late at night- tired and happy and ready to resume their normal, away-from-civilization camp existence.

GreekFestivalIN ANCIENT TIMES the Greek Dynasty was comprised of men and women who fought hard, played hard and celebrated life. That same spirit will be on display as the first-ever GREEK FESTIVAL kicks off tonight at Pok-O-MacCready. “We are not trying to imitate, nor replicate Indian Days,” says staff member Dave Durant, alluding to the major event of the first session of camp, “but we do expect this to be high energy, high emotion and a lot of fun.”

On tap for this evening is an opening ceremony, followed by the four city-states of Troy, Athens, Sparta and Argos competing in the “Trojan War” game. Wednesday will bring “The Odyssey” and the “Peloponnesian War”, followed by a massive Greek Feast and celebration, where the competing territories will gather in peace, and the 2006 champion will be announced. “It’s gonna be awesome,” said seven week camper Andrew Gonzalez. “I’m glad we’re not doing Indian Days for the three weekers.”

NPfinishCAMP WILDERNESS HISTORY IS MADE

Just when you think Pok-O-MacCready has accomplished everything possible in the mountains, along comes the Advanced Section to up the ante. In two separate trips, concluding this past weekend, camp’s oldest boys showed drive, perseverance, and a true love for hiking.

In the trip involving the older (16-year old) boys, five members of the hiking party finished what they had started one year ago. John McDonald, Mike English, Patrick Dunn, Harry Yerkes and counselor Drew Seitz completed the 122-mile Northville-Placid trail. They become the first Pok-O party to cover the entire traverse. “It was much easier this year than last, said McDonald. “Last year we averaged about 25 miles a day; this year, 18. When we reached the finish (left), wePeakBaggers all cheered, and started sprinting!”

Concurrent to that trip, the 15-year old ADV members (right) went into the woods for five days, climbing 16 Adirondack Forty-Sixers. It’s most mountains ever climbed during a single camp trip, eclipsing a 30-year old record of 13 peaks. “We were shooting for 15 and we got 16,” said Benn Singer. “It was fun!”

On the subject of the 46ers, five campers are in line to finish their quests of the Adirondack High Peaks during this final week of camp. Details and photos of those trips will be posted as the news filters back to camp.
