DAY OF CHAMPIONS

The 40th Big MacCready Horse Show

BigMac2  Two Pok-O-MacCready campers saved the best for last!

Riders Megan Raffle and Emma Malpeso had their biggest equestrian performances at the summers’ biggest event, each capturing three blue ribbons and Champion honors at the annual Big MacCready Horse Show, heldBigMac4 Sunday morning and afternoon.

The duo were just two of six camp champions, being joined by class winners Hayley Garment, Emma Crudder, Megan Campbell and Alaina Ring. They were nearly equaled by five other riders who won Reserve ribbons as the class runner-up (see list below), including Christian Artuso. “It was great seeing the Pok-O boys do so well,” said show Director Catherine Harrison. “Christian just started cantering this week, and he won a division in the walk-trot-canter class. And James Holly just started riding three days ago, yet he signed up for the show and took part in the walk-trot class.”

Although she did not win blue, Emilia Malpeso was “just great in the Gambler’sAerodynamic Choice class,” according to Harrison, as the MacCready camper took 2nd in this division reserved for only highly skilled jumpers. All told, Pok-O-MacCready captured 20 blue ribbons in this competition between campers, as well as experienced riders from outside programs.

The program concluded with the annual counselor ride, with Abby Comeau and Sallie Sommerville winning best rider honors, while brothers David (wearing a skirt) and Alex (as a fireman) Durant won the costume class.

DIGITAL ARTISTRY AND MASTERY

In just its third year at camp, the class of digital photography has kept up with our advancing technological society, while maintaining an allegiance to the true art of taking a picture. Taught by Meaghan Swan (who also instructs a course in traditional film photography), the campers concentrate on lighting, color, composition and mood, and work at both the art of creating a picture, and post-producing the image on a computer. “It’s fun and cool,” says camper Alyssa Dolgin. “The pictures are fun to take. Says Swan: “The kids have a blast. They dress up and do other stuff for the photos; They really get into it.”

Some samples of their work appear below.

The entire camp family communed on the junior ball field Saturday evening for the annual Pok-O Palooza- a celebration of music and fun, a la Woodstock. Among the attractions were games, challenges, live music and a groovy feeling of brother and sisterhood.

The carnival kicked off with the annual “Pizza Slam” where campers had there choice of slices with a variety of conventional and/or exotic toppings.
