You don’t go on a trip to Henderson Lake and MacNaughton Mountain unless you truly love the wilderness. No 46ers to bag; no trail to follow; no summit views to be had. Just natural solitude. “We didn’t see another person for three days,” said trip leader David Durant. “Just a lot of fun,” said C.I.T. Elizabeth Edwards.
Six campers took part in this backwoods hiking and canoeing experience, including Thomas Schieffer, who unfortunately forgot his hiking boots, but still managed to successfully and enjoyably complete the traverse with sandals.
The MacNaughton trip is one of 16 taking place this week at camp (see full list here), and part of nearly 100 hiking, climbing, sailing, canoeing, kayaking and scenic excursions sent out by camp in 2006. “The biggest challenge,” according to wilderness Director Ken Ryba, “is working around all of the options offered at camp. Kids want to play sports, go to all-camp events and take part in section activities. But they still want to hike.”
And hike they have. “The best part,” says Camp MacCready wilderness coordinator Maggie Durlacher, “is that kids get to experience life in its most organic form.”
