TENNIS DOMINATION

Kantor wins 6-0, 6-0 for the “Three-peat”

LindsayGroundstroke  For the second straight year she lost no matches, no sets, no games! Lindsay Kantor becomes the first three-time winner in the history of the Pok-O Open, rolling over Venezuelan Claudia Tetzner without dropping a game. In fact, Kantor has not lost a single tournament game since 2004, the year she won her first title. “I’d like to have had a bit more competition,” said the Ladies champion from West Hampton, NY, “but I don’t mind winning easily.” Said the runner-up: “It’s impossible to beat her, but she’s a friend so I don’t mind losing.”

In the Gentlemen’s final, Varun Anand of Wayland, MA had a tougher time. The top seed for the second straight year (he lost in the 2005 final) needed two tough sets to best Connecticut native David Horwich 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. “It was tougher than I thought; I was kind of freaking in the first set,” said Anand. In set number two, Anand managed to stay focused, while Horwich was getting visibly frustrated.  “I’m happy to finally win,” understated the champion.

NO QUESTION WHO’S BEST IN CAMP

In a lighthearted exhibition played in front of a crowd of interested campers, Kantor defeated Anand 6-0 in a “Battle of the Champions”, and followed that up with a winner-take-all one game victory over tennis instructor and tournament director Cecilia Disney. At age 14, Lindsay Kantor has two more years to try and extend her incredible unbeaten streak, and the rest of camp will try- perhaps in vain- to take at least one game from her. A QUARTET OF NEW FORTY-SIXERS

DualBabyFood  On two separate hikes, three 16-year olds in their final week as Pok-O-MacCready campers, finished their Adirondack Forty-Sixers on Thursday. One more camper finished earlier today.

Advanced Section hikers Harry Yerkes and Michael English completed their quests together on the summit of Colden Mountain. The joint finish was only fitting, as46rPins the two have climbed together as campers for the past several summers. “It was great to get to the top and shake Harry’s hand,” said English. It’s nice to be done!”

“We had a great time,” added Yerkes. “The best part was standing on the final false peak before the top, and just looking at the top.” The climbing party included Pok-O-Moonshine nurse Kathy Gigantiello, who got to witness the boys of honor chugging back the ceremonial jars of baby food. “It was sweet potatoes and chicken, and I hate sweet potatoes!”, said Yerkes.

CongratsLizzie  Meanwhile, approximately 14 miles north of Colden, MacCready C.I.T. Elizabeth Edwards became the girls camp’s first 2006 46er with her finish atop Esther Mountain. Along with a group of campers and counselors, including fellow 46ers EdwardsFamilyEleanor Roberts, Alexandra Disney, Rebecca Ryba and Elizabeth Disney, Edwards was joined by her camper brothers, and her parents, who reside in nearby Lake Placid. The group carried flowers to the summit, which they presented to the new 46er. “We stayed on top for like two hours and just had fun,” said youngest brother Matt Edwards

The third family sibling, Nick Edwards, finished his 46 this morning at 10:46 on Haystack Mountain. Again, the family was on hand, meeting up with campers and counselors who had awoken at 2:30am, in order to get an early start and be back at camp in time for the banquet (they were a bit late). “I’m next,” proclaimed Matt. “I have 33, and I hope to finish next year!”

With seven new 46ers this summer (Yerkes, English and the Edward’s are joined by Tim Caradonna, who finished Tuesday, and Devin Hall and J.T. Brooks who finished earlier in the summer), Pok-O-MacCready now has 283 known Adirondack Forty-Sixers. Three additional staff members are expected to increase that total in the week following camp’s conclusion.

SailinRacePHOTO FINISH ON LONG POND

In what all observers agreed was the closest sailing race in the history of Jack’s Cup, the team of Liana Blum and Lex Artuso captured the prestigious regatta Friday morning, winning by less than one second over Michael English and Matt Kantor.

“It was so close and so high energy! Me and Lex took a big early lead and then the othersSailinRace1 caught up. We’re not even sure who won it,” said Blum shortly after the race, prior to the official results being announced.

English and Kantor led heading toward the finish line but it was close; less than a boat length. “At the finish, a gust of wind pushed Lex and Liana ahead by less than a foot,” said regatta Director Eric Bauer. “The judges had to confer to determine the winner.”

Rachel Schott and Dorothy Farrell won the opening preliminary heat and ended up third overall, followed by Kyle Mangione and Caitlin Livsey. (SEE FULL JACK’S CUP RESULTS HERE)
