SPARTA RULES THE EMPIRE

City State Captures Inaugural Greek Festival

GreekFestivalIn just two days, the campers are leaving and camp will be spartan. For now, however, it’s the Spartans who stand the tallest, having captured the first ever Greek Festival, held Tuesday and Wednesday at Pok-O-MacCready.

With victories in both the Trojan War game and the Peloponnesian War, the team in red earned a narrow one-half point overall championship. Athens, winners of Tuesday morning’s The Odyssey, ended in second place overall, followed by Troy and Argos. (SEE FULL RESULTS, TEAM ROSTERS and PHOTOS HERE).

Below is a recap of all of the Greek Festival final day activities at camp.

THE ODYSSEY

Homer wrote the epoch chronicle of the return to home and family. In camp’s version, the four city-states were put on a demanding journey, consisting of solving clues, performing tasks, and covering territory both on land and sea. Each city-states were divided into two groups: The younger “heirs”, and older “war leaders.

“It was fun! I especially liked the tasks. I like solving things. I also liked winning!” -Peter Craig: Athens

THE PELOPONNESIAN WAR

This historic conflict erupted in 431 BC between the Athenian empire and the Peloponnesian league, led by Sparta. The goal of the game was to diminish the power of the other city-states by being the city-state with the most “advancements” at the end of the game. The contest included capturing cities, capturing heroes and warriors, finding treasure and earning gold coins. Casualties were inflicted by the legendary ancient Greek means of flourhwaks, water balloons and “caught-caught-caught”

THE GREEK FEAST

“The city-states are now at peace. Let us celebrate!” So announced Zeus to kick off the Greek Feast. Aside from a supper of meat, potatos and vegetables- sans utensils- impromptu skits were performed at the behest of the Gods. The evening culminated with the announcement of the winning city-state: Sparta.
