NATIONS AT WAR

Indian Competitions Begin Today

”The grand history of the Native American people is filled with legends, and now is your chance to create your own legend!”

So uttered the mighty Indian Chief at last night’s opening council fire, which officially kicked off the 2005 Indian competitions.  The first event is scheduled for this afternoon, with the Pok-O-Moonshine Great Indian Track meet being held on the ballfield.

citdance     The opening council featured traditional dancing, a call to the Gods to light the fire, and sage words regarding teamwork, spirit and sportsmanship. A highlight for new campers and counselors was the announcement of their tribal assignments (see list of tribes here). “It was amazing,” said first-year camper and brand new Tuscarora Eliza Blum.  “It was scary and fun at the same time. Very authentic!”

At the conclusion of the ceremonies, campers silently filed out of the council ring, comforted by being part of a tribe, and anxious about, while eager for the upcoming competition.

CLASSES BEGIN

The comprehensive and diverse class/activity schedule began Wednesday morning.  For the first session of potterycamp, 42 different activities are offered, ranging from archery to tennis; pottery (left) to mountain biking.  Boy campers have six different periods, while girls have eight.  (see full camper schedule).

Pok-O Intermediate camper Harper Johnson-Salter is taking camp’s newest offering:  Martial arts. “I love everything, all of it. We learn the importance of self-defense but not to attack.”.

S.H.L. SEASON OPENS

The Senior Hockey League (SHL) began it’s 16th season with a full slate of games. “I like it a lot,” exclaimed first year camper Alex Sieger, who scored a goal in his debut. “It seems pretty competitive, but fun. It’s non-stop with no breaks once the game starts.”  With games played at the state-of-the-art Pok-O-Plex, the season will continue throughout the four-week session, with the playoff champion winning the prized “Coupe Colonel Cup.”
