Pok-O-MacCready splits with Lincoln in two close duals
One game went to the bottom of the final inning. The other game went extra innings. Both were decided in the final at bat, with Pok-O-MacCready winning one, Lincoln winning the other, and both baseball games providing a multitude of drama and excitement..
At Keeseville, NY- In the older game, The Pok-O squad of boys and girls picked up where they had left off on Tuesday, when the jumped out to an 8-0 lead before the contest was rained out. This time, Pok-O scored three in the first inning, four in the second to take a 7-2 lead. The major spark was provided by David Balderston, who knocked a long home run to straight away center field.
After that, the Pok-O bats went quiet, although starting pitcher Jordan Dunleavy (left) remained solid. “It was a great game,” uttered team coach Andy Reithal. “Fanstastic pitching!” Dunleavy struck out 12, but as the game progressed, the Lincoln bats began to peck away. Two runs in the bottom of the sixth tied it, and a one out Pok-O error with a runner on second base plated the winning tally for Lincoln in the bottom of the seventh. Final score: Lincoln-10, Pok-O-Mac- 9.
At Willsboro, NY- A Max Gailey solo homer with two outs in the bottom of the seventh (extra) inning gave Pok-O-MacCready a 6-5 victory and a split of the season series with Lincoln. Pok-O overcame deficits of 4-1 and 5-3 prior to Gailey’s shot to left-center field. Had Gailey been retired, the game would have ended tied. “I felt pressure but I thought I’d get a hit. And once I hit it, I knew I was going all the way around.” (celebration, right)
Mark Balderston, working in relief of starting pitcher Spencer Ivey, pitched out of a couple of bases loaded jams to earn the victory.
Inter-camp competition continues next week with games scheduled with camps Lincoln, Whipporwill and Dudley in softabll, basketball, tennis, sailing, archery and ultimate frisbee.
