STAFF PROFILE: Tommy de Clemente

Renaissance Maintenance ManTommy

Talk about being thrown to the wolves! Thomas de Clemente arrived at camp a mere two days before the campers, inheriting one of the organizations most demanding positions:  Head of maintenance.  The position entails everything from building new window screens, checking on the septic system, to repairing the hard drive on a camp computer.

Based on a full life of diverse experiences, de Clemente has been up to the task thus far. The native of North Haledon, NJ and world traveler took time out of his busy day to answer questions from the Pok-O-Mac Times.

How did you hear about camp? “I dropped off Mattie (Intermediate section head Matt Leto) before camp. By the time we got here, I immediately thought, ‘This is a great place!’  Mattie said they were looking for a maintenance guy and I said, ‘That’s something I can do.’”

What’s your background? “I’ve done many things.  I spent the last 18 months in India studying medidation and yoga.  Prior to that, I was in med school studying naturalistic medicine.  Before that I did some massage therapy. There was also time spent in China, and in Italy, where half of my family lives.”

TomWorkWhat’s the biggest challenge in being camp’s maintenance man? “Organizing all of the tools and the tasks.  Sometimes I spend two hours looking for a shovel only to spend five minutes getting a rock loose. There is no shortage of tasks.”

How about working with kids? “This is a nice intro. I don’t have to be with them as much as the counselors do. I came late and I’m paying my dues.  I do get to spend time with the kids at meals, and crossing paths throughout the day.”

What’s been the best part so far? “Just how helpful all of the people are. Sharp, Phil, Shai and Matty.  There has been a lot to learn:  Names, the lay of the land. Everyone’s been great”

What’s next for you? “I want to get more serious about music (guitar).  I also want to continue to spend time with nature.  It’s a good way to live without a lot of overhead.”

“HIGH SEAS”- Campers awoke Wednesday to a stiff north wind, which caused the temperature to dive, and the lake to swell.

While conditions may not have been ideal for swimming, eager sailors were quick to rig the boats and head out on to the surf (below).  Thursday’s forecast calls for clearing and warmer, with the high pressure expected to last into the weekend.
