Oldest boys learn about being counselors, and hike like mad
by Bill Reagan - 2nd year ADV camper
Many people wonder what the mysterious ADV section is all about. Some think all they do is pay camp to come here and work on stuff that the camp doesn’t feel like doing. While that is partly true, there is much more to the ADV section. They are all about gaining knowledge on many levels, including the outdoors and how to become better leaders for future positions at Camp Poko-MacCready. The ADV section is also big on keeping it’s participants in shape. Very often you may see them running down Reber Road at 6:00am, or hiking the many 46er’s in the Adirondacks.
The ADV section is famous for the work projects they are assigned. Often these projects are attempted to seem more fun, by ending the name with the word “Game”. The Hay Game, Wood Game, and Boat Dock Cleanup Game are just some of the things they do over the summer.
One of the biggest things in ADV is to become better leaders for the future. On trips, the counselors are often referred to as “Whispering Winds.” This means they are there to keep us alive, but the students basically have to figure everything out themselves. That includes cooking, making sure there is enough water, and timing everything together so that nothing is late. This is a great way to teach the students because they will learn by mistakes and/or just doing it themselves.
