Camp MacCready Honors its Past

Cabins named for legendary female influences

by Kate Durlacher, Senior Section Head

Last Sunday evening at Vespers, the MacCready Senior girls presented the results of our cabin-naming activity. At the onset of the summer we decided to replace the lackluster numbers of our six cabins with names of dignified individuals who were important to the development and/or enhancement of our camp. Accordingly, over the past four weeks the girls have worked very hard inquiring, interviewing, and probing into the history of Camp MacCready. The following are transcripts of the presentations performed for the entire camp.

We would like to extend a collective thank you to Sharpe Swan, Jean Sidaras, and the many other people who shared their knowledge and experiences with us.   It was an honor for us to do this, and we can only hope that the names stick as well as the legends themselves.

cabin1

Missy House (formerly Cabin 1)

named for Melissa Livsey:, Head of Camp MacCready, 1996-2004

Missy was our head for many many years,

When she left she brought us to tears.

For section activity

We used our creativity

To give our cabin the name

Of “Missy” who would never cause us shame.

So now we present to you

The Missy House.

And if Missy were here now she would probably

Be wearing a nice blouse!

cabin2

Hankins (formerly Cabin 2)

named for James Hankins: Head Chef, 1905-1952

We named our cabin after James Hankins, the famous founder of James’ Ice Cream.

For 48 years James Hankins was an influential part of camp, not only as an amazing cook but also as an inspirational figure.

We hope our cabin remains as important to Senior Section as Hankins was to camp.

(Senior Section chimes in with camp song ending: “…And the thing we like the best of all is James’ ice cream!”)

cabin3

Sherred (formerly Cabin 3)

named for sisters Allison and Claire Sherred: Campers, counselors, riding directors

We’re Cabin Sherred, that’s our name.

After two girls, to MacCready they came.

They saw Pok-O and though it was sweet,

But it needed a girls camp to make it complete.

So they started up riding,

Did some hiking too,

They helped Jean Sidaris

And to MacCready they were true.

It was 1967

When it all began.

They made camp great

Even if you’re not a man!

Claire

cabin4

Margulies (formerly Cabin 4)

named for Juliana Margulies: Camper, standout rider, Emmy award winner

Margulies was a Mohawk from the start.

As a fierce leader she would depart.

The first sachem of a winning tribe,

She helped give the Mohawks their strength and pride.

cabin5

Belle Sidaris (formerly Cabin 5)

named for Jean Sidaris:  Head of Camp MacCready, 1973-1995

Senior Cabin 5’s new name is Belle Sidaris.

‘Belle’ means ‘beautiful’ in French.

We chose it because Jean is so close to our hearts.

We owe her a lot for all that she has done.

Without her, MacCready would not be so fun.

We hope the name will stay for many years to come,

In honor of all that Jean Sidaris has done.

Jean

cabin6

Sadie (formerly Cabin 6)

named for Sadie Robinson:  Wife of camp’s founder; early influence

- We decided to name our cabin after Sadie Robinson, the wife of Doctor Robinson.

- We wrote a poem describing who she was.

- S: She always expected the best from the campers.

- A: Always had a lot of self-respect.

- D: Did her best to make sure everyone enjoyed their stay at camp.

- I: Intelligence was a major characteristic that described her.

- E: Extremely important part of the history of Camp Pok-o-MacCready.
