There were plenty of hugs. The usual tears. Trading of email addresses. The promise to “see you next The Camp MacCready ball field was packed with people at 7:30 this morning, and looming off at the corner of the field: two large busses, ominously waiting to take the campers away. The opening session of the 2005 camp season has officially ended and with it, some joy, excitement, and the memories of some 130 children.
Clara Bieck: “It’s sad. I’m going to miss everyone, but now I can see my family and my cat.” Carder Welles: “I don’t want to leave but I’ll be happy to see my family.” Molly Wagner: “I now have more people who I consider friends. I can write to them, but I don’t want to leave.” Xylina Robles: “I don’t want to go; I’ve cried already. I have something to look forward to for next summer.” Justin Jacobs: “Next year I’m staying for seven!” And that’s just what several campers have decided to do this summer. Intermediate Moustafa Ahmed, scheduled to leave today, called home just last night and got the O.K. to continue his summer at camp, “because it’s too fun to leave. I called my parents and my Mom was sad, but I told her I’d make her something in pottery class.” Likewise, C.I.T. Ally Shapiro, who made a late decision to stick around: “The last three weeks is the best part of camp. You get to go out to a lot of places and hang out with your friends.” Some 70 full-season campers are spending today at the beach and an evening at the movies. Tommorow, they will be joined by 80 additional campers for a second session that includes The Blue-Grey Game; The Renaissance Game; The Pok-O Open; Casino Night; The Pirate Party and a trip to the Great Escape theme park, to name just a few activities. |

Prior to their departure, campers gathered at their respective boys and girls camps to take part in four-week award ceremonies. All campers received certificates and citations for their participation in classes, sports teams, swimming and selected special events. Additionally, all departing campers received special awards, including wilderness trip patches, hiking awards and the years-of-service awards. The ceremony culminated with the presentation of the Pok-O “P’s”, The MacCready “M’s” and the coveted Spirit Awards. |
