HOSTING A PARTY

Visiting Day to include great food, great fun

”It used to be that people hung out all day!” So exclaimed Pok-O-MacCready Director Sharp Swan, referring to campers and their visitors on Parent’s Day.  Indeed, “Pok-O-Picnics” of yore featured not only the picnic lunch, but a full afternoon of recreation and relaxation at camp.cook03

Swan is committed to bringing back that tradition, starting with this year’s parents day, scheduled for Saturday, July 16.  It won’t be easy, as the trend in recent years has been for campers to want to experience “the real world” and get out of camp. “We may hang out for the picnic,” says Anna Greenwood. “My Dad likes to see his old camp friends. Adds Jack Connors-Kellgren:  “I’m in no hurry to get ‘outta’ here, but it’s, like, you get the same food every day!”

And that will be different this year.  Plans will call for an outdoor barbecue- Texas style- with brisket, beans, corn-on-the-cob, salads, rolls and ice cream.  In addition, information booths will be setup for parents, and camp merchandise will be available. Throughout the afternoon, the boat dock, swim docks, tennis courts and athletic fields will be available for everyone’s use.

“We hope parents will stick around for awhile,” said program director Tim Singer.  “Parents can see camp, watch their child’s activity, have a good meal, have some fun, and the kids will still have plenty of time to head to the mall, catch a movie, buy the Harry Potter book and have dinner out.”

MacCready Sweeps Whipporwill in Softball

chopper   The girls from Camp MacCready won both softball games against Camp Whipporwill Monday afternoon, with the older girls winning a 15-5 rout at home, and the younger team taking a 7-4 road victory.

In the older contest, MacCready used a balanced attack and a huge third inningsafeathome to take control of the contest.  “We really had a good rally in the third inning,” said Molly Babcock. “That set us off and we never looked back.”  Babcock and Chloe Storch shared the pitching duties, while virtually everyone in the lineup had a base hit.

At Whipporwill, Camp MacCready relied on 2-run double by Teonna O’Leary, and the intimidating pitching of Christina Fink to spark the 7-4 win.  “The other team was afraid of Christina’s pitching, but we also relied on good cheering, teamwork and sportsmanship,” voiced MacCready coach Bessie Edwards..

25 Acts Showcase Camp Talent

A record number of singers, dancers, comedians and actors took to the dining hall stage Monday night for the 101st annual Pok-O-MacCready Air Guitar and Talent Show. The panel of judges rated the acts on costuming, originality and presentation. Camp MacCready senior Katie Gigantiello was the hit of the night, with her solo tap dance to the tune “It’s Raining Men” earning her a standing ovation and first place honors. Runner-up went to the Advanced Section’s rendition of the Village People’s “Y.M.C.A.”
