INTO THE WILD

33 Trips have gone into the woods; On to the waters

With camp only 15 days old, Pok-O-MacCready has been averaging over two wilderness trips per day. Trips have ranged from local day trips, to some into the Adirondack High peaks lasting up to three days. To date, the Henderson02wilderness experience has been diverse:  Mountain climbs, scenic hikes, canoeing, mountain biking and rock climbing.

“It is one of those truly unique experiences,” says camp’s program director Tim Singer. “Once a kid experiences the beauty and sense of accomplishment, there is no turning back.” Adds wilderness coordinator Ken Ryba:  “The kids really embrace this, regardless of the weather.”

Many more trips are planned in the days and weeks ahead. So far as a camp, Pok-O has climbed close to 30 of the Adirondack Forty-Sixers (see trip list). Individually, two campers (Bill Reagan and Harry Yerkes) as well as two staff members (Drew Seitz and Fiona Dubuss) are within a few peaks of finishing their ADK 46 (see full Camp 46er Membership).

MacCready Hosts Season’s First Horse Show

by, Heidi Taggert

Gym1   The “Gymkhana” was lots of fun. We played games like “Candy on a Spoon”, “Chubby Horsey” (modified version of Chubby Bunny), the “Sponge Game” (trying to keep as much water as possible in the sponge), “Bobbin’ for Candy”, and “Sit-a-Buck”.

“The show was really fun,” said Anna Finucane.  “Even though the horses acted up a little, we were O.K.  I loved it very, very much. Thanks to the ridiing staff.”

The whole event was a blast, being with your friends, riding horses, and having fun, all in the sun.

Boys Indian Boat Carnival Ends in Tie

CanoeBob   The Cayuga stormed back to win the final three events and pull into a first place final tie in the 101st running of the Great Indian Boat Carnival. The event consisted of ten different competitions, held in perfect weather on Long Pond.  “It was awesome because I thought my surfing impressions were really good,” said Seneca Andrew Gonzalez. “It was great,” stated Tuscarora Jack Kinney.  “It involved everyone. A lot of fun!”

The Cayuga and Tuscarora tied for first; the Seneca and Mohawk ended deadlocked in third place, with the Onondaga finishing fifth.  (See latest tribal rankings)Bismark02

“Sink the Bismark (right) was great. It was total confusion.  Everyone yelling at each other and splashing.  Great fun!” -- Dylan Bronstein:  Tuscarora
