CAMP COMPLETES THE 46

Campers in line to also finish the quest

46erLogo   Seven campers and two staff members reached the top of Mt. Marshall Friday afternoon as Pok-O-MacCready Camps completed the 46 Adirondack high peaks for the 10th time in the past 11 summers.

“We had a great group and a great time,” said trip leader Mike Taptick. “It rained a bit inviewdown the morning, but when we reached Marcy Dam, it stopped, and by the time we got to Avalanche Pass, it was beautiful.”  It was the 75th wilderness trip sent out by camp this summer, of which 33 have been destined for the ADK 46ers.

Camp’s wilderness director Ken Ryba stated “We are proud to have finished the 46 as a camp, but we are extremely excited about finishing off some of our campers.” In fact, Two boys and two girls are in line to do just that during the final week of camp, as Liana Mistrial, Eleonor Roberts, Lucas Schaffer and Jack Kinney each have over 40 peaks.

Meantime, other campers have more long-term plans.  “This was just my second mountain,” said Ali MacKay, a member of the Marshall party, “but I wanna be a forty-sixer someday!”

The preliminary rounds are out of the way, and now action begins to get fierce at the 101st edition of the Pok-O Open Tennis Championships.

Top seeded Varun Anand (Wayland, MA) leads a field of 19 players in the gentlemen’s draw and has already advanced to the semifinals.  He still faces a potential upset at the racquet of Joe Quinones, a late entry who did not receive a seed.

In the ladies bracket, Lindsay Kantor (West Hampton, NY) is the #1 seed and heavily favored. Matches will continue throughout the weekend with the ladies championship set for Sunday, and the Gentlemen’s final scheduled for Monday on Court Central.

UP IN SMOKE: For the second session of camp, a special class has been offered in Rocketry.  The campers make their rockets from scratch, using materials from camp’s recycling bins. There has been no shortage of creativity in the designs. Says co-instructor Andy Reithal: “It’s not only fun, but it’s a great lesson in science, especially physics and mechanics.”
