CASINO OPEN FOR BUSINESS

Millions of dollars changes hands

With an eclectic mix of Old West saloon motif, and modern day bright lights and high-rolling, Pok-O-MacCready’s Robinson Hall was transformed Wednesday evening into a full-fledged casino. Campers received several thousand dollars apiece; some were able to parlay that into millions.

“I made a lot of money playing craps,” said Gabe Orozco.  “I cleared $75,000. It takes a bit of luck, but you have to know the percentages.”  Campers also had the chance to try their skill and luck in a variety of other games and contests; they could choose to invest in the stock market or simply spend their loot on candy and soda.

The evening was disrupted several times by a band of thieves. They were eventually apprehended by the Sheriff and while waiting for bail to be posted “Heidi” said, “I made off with over 150-thousand dollars, but it all was returned.”  “Hannah” claimed she took much less than that but “it was all stolen back from me.”

Perhaps as a result of the looting, casino general manager Ben Moss has closed down operations, “at least until August, 2006.

ATHLETES FACE TOUGH COMPETITION

In the summer’s final inter-camp sports competition, Pok-O-MacCready competed against Camp Regis-Applejack Wednesday, hosting games in volleyball and softball, while traveling for the tennis and soccer matches. All Pok-O-Mac teams were coed. (see team rosters and photos here)

SOFTBALL:  The incredible pitching by Caroline Wood was offset by the occasional control problems by Wood, as she struck out 11, but walked seven in a 2-1 loss.  Sam Politi drove in Pok-O’s lone run with a two-out single in the third inning.

VOLLEYBALL:  The Regis-Applejack squad was no match for a Pok-O-MacCready team that has waited all summer to compete against another camp.  Led by the consistent serving of Julia Schweitzer, and good all-around play, Pok-O took the match in three straight games.

AT REGIS:  Lindsay Kantor (above) upset the other camp’s top seed in tennis, 6-4. “It’s the best I’ve ever played,” she said, while coach Cecilia Disney gushed, “It’s the best tennis I’ve ever seen!”  In soccer, the two camps split a pair of games.
