Better For It
What follows is a camp perspective written by 15 year-old Adavanced Section camper John McDonald.
I’m lying in the sun right now, trying to think of what to write. There’s a cool breeze, and I’m reminded of the 40mph winds, and hail on top of Mount Marcy last week. That hike was intense. It was a challenge, and I’m better for it.
I hear the waves crashing against the shore and I’m reminded of the first time I rowed a boat. “Squeaky” came with me and I’m sure he was a little bit scared that I might have flipped the boat. At first I could only row in circles, but with his help I was soon able to row pretty well. It was fun, and I’m better for it.
I see enormous white clouds covering the sky. I am reminded of last year’s A.Z.W. game with the C.I.T.’s. It was pouring that day and the hockey rink was practically a pool. I’ve never seen it rain that much in my entire life. We slipped and slid all over the place and had a great time. It was fun, and I’m better for it.
I look across from me and see my friends sleeping after a long four days of hiking. Some of them I’ve kept in touch with. Some of them, I’m just getting to know, and I’m learning more and more from all of them as each day of this short summer passes. I hope to stay in touch with all of them for many years to come.
The point I want to make is that you do things here at camp that you can’t do anywhere else. Where else can you hike 46ers, party at the Pirate Palooza, sail in Jack’s Cup, and play at Casino Night. You meet some absolutely amazing people here.
We are all unbelievably lucky to have this place. This is my fifth summer at camp and each year has been better than the last. Camp is a second home to me, as I’m sure it is to many of you.
I hope everyone here realizes what they have here at Pok-O, appreciates it, and learns things that will make us all better people. In closing, I hope that, in listening to this, you are all better for it.
