Tuscarora pick up where they left off
With a second place finish in one event and a victory in the other, the Tuscarora captured the 101st annual Indian Games three-week competition Wednesday. By taking first, the 2005 tribal champions get a head start in the race for the 2006 title; results will count as one event in next year’s Indian Games tally.
The day began with a brand new contest: the THE BLACK COURT RIVER MASSACRE of 2005, AKA THE THUNDERHAWK GAME, aka Indian Blackline. The Black Court River Massacre is a reenactment of a famous fictitious battle between Iroquois tribes. The game involved throwing “thunderhawks”, freeing jails, fording rivers, retreating, and capturing braves and princesses. Additionally, each tribe had to perform a task.
“It was really, really fun,” said Onondaga Dorothy Farrell. “It was a lot like dodge ball but with a twist to make it more like a camp game for Indian Days.” Said Sam Sprague of the Mohawk, “It was a simple strategy: If you’re one of the better players, then don’t get hit!”
The afternoon brought a return of five-sided “Super Rolas”, a variation of the game contested during the four- week session. A sudden storm forced a temporary retreat indoors, where the tribe members waged a trivia competition. “It was an intense, action-filled day,” boasted the White Woman. “The tribes all displayed great energy and sportsmanship.”
