KEN (Squeaky) HERZ – Camp Advisor First Year at Camp: 1969 University
: Boston Profession: School Teacher
Ken first arrived at camp as a wild and energetic nine year-old in 1969. He was promptly given the
nickname “Squeaky” and neither the name nor the description has changed in the thirty-nine years he has been affiliated
with camp. Squeak was the Section Head of Pioneer and Intermediate from 1981-2001. In 2007 he will be at camp
doing what he does best: focusing on the details of everything from lost and found to table assignments. He and wife
Marianne live in Chazy, NY along with their two adorable daughters, Willow and Melanie. Squeaky is 46er #1334.
JEAN SIDARAS – Assistant and Advisor for the Girls Camp First Year at Camp: 1973 University: West Virginia Profession: Retired College Instructor
Jean continues to advise and assist in the direction of Camp MacCready. She served as director from
1973-1995, and now retains the most enviable positions…distributing money and running candy store! In fact, the new
camp store and its online counterpart have been affectionately named “JeanMart”. She spends the winter in Cazenovia, NY.
MIRIAM SCHAFFER First Year at Camp
: 1995
After a summer away from camp, Miriam returns to Pok-O for a new position as the office assistant. Her laid back personality will complement the constant activity of the office but she’ll also manage to escape and lead hikes during the
summer. Miriam attends Bates College in Maine when she’s not skiing in Telluride or trekking in Asia..
WENDY SAYWARD – Health Director First Year at Camp: 1993 University: SUNY Plattsburgh, SUNY New Paltz Profession: Registered Nurse; MSN, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Professor of Nursing
Wendy has been involved with camp in some capacity for most of the last 12 years. Having served as
both Camp Nurse and Health Director for many years, she is the architect of the current Health Services Department at
Pok-O-MacCready, generally considered the very best in the Adirondacks. She is 46er #4039, and lives with Sharp Swan in Essex, NY.
KATHY GIGANTIELLO – Boys Camp Nurse
First Year at Camp: 1976 University: Holy Name Hospital School of Nursing Profession: Registered Professional Nurse
After a 26-year absence from Pok-O-MacCready, Kathy returned to camp in 2004 as the boys’ camp
nurse. At home in New Jersey with her husband Joe she balances four kids, three cats, and a dog while working full
-time and going to school. She is looking forward to eventually having the Health Office named in her honor. 
HILDE DARRE – Girls Camp Nurse First Year at Camp: 2005 Profession: Registered Professional Nurse
Hilde will return in 2007 for her third summer as the MacCready Nurse, bringing her children, Henry
and Anna Hector. The Adirondacks provide a beautiful respite from her hectic schedule during the year in New York City. She can often be seen walking her dog, Stella, around camp.
AUGUSTA WILSON – Day Off Nurse First Year at Camp: 1996 University: University of Vermont Profession: Registered Professional Nurse
For the fourth time in her 17-year nursing career, Augusta is taking time off to be at camp. In 1996, she was the head of Senior section at MacCready and this summer, as in the past few years, Augusta will serve as a fill-in
nurse and assist with other programs. A resident of Shelburne, Vermont, Augusta is 46er #5315
MIKE GAST - Head Cook First Year at Camp: 1992 Profession: Chef; Bus Driver
Mike first came to camp in the early 1990s along with his wife, former Riding Director, Mary. Working
first as a kitchen assistant, Mike advanced to Head Chef, and spent several off-seasons as Maintenance Director. Mike is especially popular for his frequent announcements at meals, including the “Rule of the
Day.”
GRACE CRAWFORD – Assistant Kitchen Manager First Year at Camp: 2006
A valuable addition to last year’s kitchen staff, Grace returns for her second summer at Pok-O. When
not working hard in Robinson Hall she spends much of her free time down at the swim docks. Grace hails from England and enjoys practicing tae kwan do.
